 Hollywood: Fact or Fiction

This course will explore Hollywood’s fascination with biographical films and movies based on actual events. We will examine and dissect the actual historical events and people depicted in the motion picture. We will be armed with the true facts upon which the movie was based. Then we will view the motion picture to determine, and ultimately discuss, where the director and screenwriter “manipulated and altered” the actual facts to suit their film.
A Sal St. George Presentation.

The four motion pictures we will study for true life accuracy are:
Yankee Doodle Dandy – James Cagney’s award winning performance as patriotic song and dance man, George M. Cohan. NOTE: The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (James Cagney), Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound, Recording, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Walter Huston), Best Director, Best Film Editing for George Amy, Best Picture and Best Writing, Original Story.
The Jolson Story – Larry Park’s dynamic portrayal of popular singer, Al Jolson, made this motion picture a critical and financial success. NOTE: The film won Academy Awards for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound, Recording and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Larry Parks), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (William Demarest), Best Cinematography, Color and Best Film Editing.

Topsy Turvy – The story of Gilbert and Sullivan as they prepare to premier their latest opera; The Mikado. NOTE: At the 72nd Academy Awards, Topsy-Turvy received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design and the Academy Award for Makeup, and was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Original Screenplay.

Cat’s Meow: - Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, the film takes place during a weekend cruise aboard publisher William Randolph Hearst's yacht. Among Heart’s guests are his longtime companion Marion Davies, Charlie Chaplin, director Thomas Ince and Louella Parsons when suddenly there is a murder aboard the vessel. NOTE: Based on historic fact, what actual occurred during that fateful weekend is Hollywood legend.

Lecture dates are August 7, 14, 21, and 28!

Rock Hall Museum in Lawrence, Long Island.

In their quarter century together, the popular comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello successfully conquered vaudeville, radio, Hollywood, and television.

In 1972, playwright Sal St. George had the good fortune of meeting Bud Abbott. During this program, Sal will present a history of the comedy team plus an audio interview with Bud in which he discusses his successful, and at times, turbulent partnership with Lou. This interview has not been heard in 40 years.

The evening starts with a “Bring Your Own” outdoor picnic on the beautiful grounds of Rock Hall Museum at 5:00 pm. At 6:00 pm, we will move indoors for our Abbott and Costello lecture and presentation.
Included with the program will be a viewing of the classic Abbott and Costello comedy The Time of Their Lives.
